This month we wanted to ask F5 student Abhinav Sarna to be a part of our member spotlight. Abhinav is one of the F5 weight loss success stories, but his story is so much more than that. For those of you who take classes with him, you know that he is incredibly dedicated, consistent and cheerful. He is always smiling and giving the workout his best! When we do a gym challenge Abhinav always participates and he comes so often that he’s often done with his 15 days of training check-ins before anyone else at the gym!

Abhinav has also gotten strong, achieving more weight on his lifts as well as awesome body weight strength. You’ll often find him staying after class to do pull ups and push ups. He truly gives it his all and is an inspiration to us all, showing what you can accomplish with hard work and dedication.

1)Where are you from?

I am from the city Jaipur in India

2) Occupation?

Petroleum Engineer

3) What’s your favorite movie?

I would say its The Dark Knight. I just love the Joker character in that movie.

4) Where were you in your life before you joined and became a student at F5? How were you feeling?

After my Masters from USC I was working for a small Oil and Gas company here in Los Angeles. It was a very small company so I did not have a lot of friends there. I had a very monotonous and boring life routine. Going from home to the office and back home. On the weekends, mostly I would be at home or I’d meet with the few old friends from USC that I had left in the city. It was kind of depressing!

5) What was your turning point that you decided to take action and come train with us?

In 2015 when the oil prices fell my company kind of stopped all operations and there was not much work for me to do, so my whole life routine got even more boring. I had gained weight as I would just sit at the office and at home. It was getting more depressing. It was then that I decided that I should start to exercise, to become a little heather and to have something positive to do during the day…

When I came to F5 for the first time I had no clue what Muay Thai was, but I had seen some videos of kettlebell workouts and I wanted to try out a kettlebell workout.

6) What happened after you joined? What surprised you about the training and the gym?

When I joined the gym initially for a couple of weeks I would just die after every workout (probably because I took all coach Tyler’s classes) – just kidding I love his classes. It was because my body was not used to doing any kind of physical activity! But slowly I started gaining physical endurance and I started surviving in the classes. I started becoming stronger. I found I could move from the 10kg kettlebells to 12 kg kettlebells which felt really good. This process of getting stronger and feeling better is still ongoing and I love it. Signing up for the classes gave me a reason to plan out my day and my meals.

One of the thing that I love about the gym is that we have classes in small groups and we always have the instructor there to help us out. Another thing that I love is the different type of classes that are offered like I can do Barbell or Fighter Fit or Muay Thai so it never gets boring for me.

7) What keeps you motivated to train?

I joined the gym one year ago, and in that year I lost 50lbs, I think that’s the biggest motivator to me. I love when I meet people who have not seen me for a while and they say that I look so different and that I have lost so much weight. I feel so good and so much stronger now than a year before. Another thing that motivates me to train are the challenges that we have at Function 5 Fitness, like the 30-day F5 15 Challenge and the 8 week Strength Challange. I had never done a pull-up in my life and I chose that as my strength goal for the challenge and now I can do 4-5 pull-ups without any band!

Also, I have met so many amazing people at the gym. I have made new friends who always inspire me and help me to keep pushing forward. Lastly, I would like to give a HUGE shout out to all the coaches at F5! All you guys are amazing. Thanks for making every training session so much fun!
